Today is the last day before lent known as Fat Tuesday also as Mardi Gras which is the literal French translation. It is the last day to enjoy yourself before the 40 day fast. In addition to fasting, christians also give up something special that they enjoy. So Fat Tuesday is a celebration and the opportunity to enjoy that favorite food or snack that you give up for the long lenten season.
The occassion is honored with festivals and parades. The most famous in the US are held in New Orleans where you may see people dressed in masks and elaborate costumes. This tradition dates back to roman times as a way of expressing humor and fun in celebration.
All of our celebrations stem from our ancestors including our love of music. Enjoy the music.
