After the success of 2009’s Speakin’ Nuyorican EP (which saw licenses for both CBS’s CSI: NY and HBO’s Entourage)the man who goes by Captain Planet returns to Bastard Jazz Recordings with a dancefloor-destroying 12” steeped in the tough international breakbeat sound that he’s become known for, leading up to his first full length album, called Cookin' Gumbo dropping in September.

On the title track of the EP, “Ningane” – the Captain enlists the vocal talents of Congolese singer Fredy Massamba (known for his vocals on a couple of big African house tracks - Boddhi Satva’s “Warriors of Africa” and Ezel’s “His Presence”) – over a rugged, horn driven slice of broken Afrobeat. Fredy’s words (sung in his native Kikongo language) perfectly ride the riddim before moving into a deeper, late night house vibe with soaring vocals. Up next,Boston’s Whiskey Barons give “Ningane” a signature reflip, moving the track into classic Afro-disco territory with a four on the floor beat, live keys + guitar, chopped horns and vocals, and a bassline that’s funky as all hell. Watch out for those killer percussion breaks!

Moving to the flip, “Dame Agua” is a fire-breathing Latin scorcher with massive percussion and drums, stabbing salsa horns, bubbling organs, and vintage-sounding vocals put on the chopping block! Up next, we’re headed to Brazil with “Macumba” – a down and dirty Samba influenced 108BPM breakbeat joint with all the elements firmly intact, including beautiful Portuguese vocals sliced and diced properly…. the Captain proves time and time again that he can deftly flip an array of global sounds into a sound that is undeniably his own. Also included on the B-Side is an instrumental of “Ningane”.

Seattle-based auditory guru 214 slams the underground electro scene with his newest 6 track EP entitled "Eye Thoughts". An explosion of distorted breaks swim amid a sea of sounds that seem to stem from broken children's toys. The title track is a subtle nod to the industrial era of the mid 90s, boasting a phased snare amidst gloomy strings singing a compelling progression. Remixes from Exzakt and 'Outside Recordings' head Mr. Atomic underscore the tune perfectly, providing tastefully re-imagined versions to the mix. "Inside the Chamber" and "No Route" provide the bouncy, upbeat antithesis to the shadowy and aptly named "Lament", concluding this release with proper variety.

To sit at a table set with the sounds of 214 (TwoFourteen) is to be served Hungry-man portions of honey-buttered electro beats, side dishes of synth-line treats, and dollops of IDM-get-down.Like most musicians, Chris Roman's path is rooted in a veritable melting pot of sounds. Some of the influences are obvious. Others not so much so.

His Puerto Rican birthright and Miami upbringing ring apparent when he's pumping out sci-fi roller disco sounds, but when his vibe turns to the cold dark comfort of Detroit-esque minimal mind funk, it would seem this man forgets from whence he came. It's a memory lapse that sounds like a lapdance in the side room of a space ship. More importantly, it's a memory lapse that works. It's not so much a lapse then as a love of diversity, a creative finesse with a variety of good tastes.

214 effortlessly blends lush Latin roots with robo-transformer trips, always maintaining a skillful balance between the nasty, the not-right, the cold, hard, and just-right - all at the same time. Violating the Strings into a ravaging onslaught of transcendental wrongness not seen since Genghis Khan discovered ketamine, he strips them of any dignity they had left and warps their remaining shreds of moral fibre into a mind boggling gangbang of monstrous aural indulgence.

Diving into the unseemly fray with an arsenal of heavily medicated outboard acid hurtles Ixindamix - the fallen Aphrodite in baggy jeans and a borderline obscene knob twiddling fetish. Rolling out the bad girl bass and subsuming the Strings in an sea of scintillating sorcery, she drags them kicking and screaming through a blistering prism of old skool riot, rifling their pockets as they surrender to modulated  abandon and whipping them up into a reckless crescendo of speaker shattering goodness.
